One who want to upgrade Windows XP system to Vista, should take help of Vista Upgrade Advisor.

When you start the Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft web site, an application is downloaded to your system. After running it on your PC, you will get following window as shown in the image, you will be prompted to plug in any scanners, external hard drives, printers, or other devices may need driver updates to work well with Vista.

Prompted to plug in any printers, scanners, external hard drives, or other devices that might need driver updates to work well with Vista

The Vista Upgrade Advisor tests two types of hardware compatibility:

  • Is PC hardware is faster enough to run Vista satisfactorily
  • Is device drivers are compatible with Windows

The initial dialog box suggests that you just have to plug in the devices, one want to use with Vista. This is accurate time; one has to be very careful. Check out the following list to check out what you plugged in to your PC and powered on before you start the advisor's system scan:

  • External hard disk drives, backup devices, and USB drives of all kinds
  • Spare USB keyboards and mice that you may have forgotten
  • Printers and scanners, check whether powered on and not just plugged in
  • Extra USB hub that one seldom use-plug it in anyway to check it
  • Headphones and ear buds

When one checked for all of the preceding, and made sure plugged in all and powered on each and everything, one might want to test, click the Start System Scan button in the advisor.
